My cat is about 7 years old. She used to purr whenever she was petted, but now, she hardly ever purrs. Is there some underlying problem?

My cat used to purr quite loudly when it was a kitten...then for no apparent reason just stopped, and never purrs anymore.
I asked my vet, and she said there is nothing wrong with my cat. She said some cats just do that and nobody seems to know why.
If I were you, I would have your kitty checked by a vet anyway, as it CAN be a signal that something is wrong.
Best of luck to you and your cat!

Very interesting question. I've noticed in some of our cats (11 over 50+ years) the purr could vary with age. The older the cat, sometimes the quieter the purr but that is not a rule. A younger cat can be either loud or extremely soft. But I don't think there is a general rule here. I have a little silver-grey and white Angora on my lap right now. When she was a kitten, you could hardly hear a purr. Now that she is about 17 years old, she purrs up a storm. Unless there is an obvious health problem, I wouldn't worry about it. In any case it might be a good idea to take kitty in for a routine checkup and just tell the vet about your concern.

Purring is a way a cat is telling you they maybe content. Nevertheless, beware not all purring at times are good purrs. Cats will purr if they are ill, sick, or dying. Pay close attention to your cat if it is purring your cat can use purring as a warning when sick; to let other animals know they are a threat to them.

If your cat stops purring another thing you will want to be concerned is your cat may be sick with a virus or some other thing could be wrong. This is the time that you should be seeking a veterinarian to have your cat examined for any thing that may be wrong with your cat. In some cases, when cats get older they may stop purring or maybe the purring is so soft that you are unable to hear them purr.

Don't panic. It may be nothing, or it may be something.

Oftentimes, cats who've stopped purring may be ill, but that is not necessarily the case.

Why not take your little one to the doc for an inexpensive basic check-up, to ease your mind.

It's probably nothing, but if it does turn out to be an illness, it's always better to catch it early.

Best luck.

Maybe she is just plain bored with you or just getting old. I wouldn't worry too much.
