Those are two forms of atheism, namely "weak" atheism and "strong" atheism.

An absence in a belief in God is called 'weak atheism'. A belief that there is no God is called 'strong atheism'. You may get an argument from a 'strong atheist' that 'weak' isn't truly atheism.

Atheism was originally defined as '...a willful and malicious repudiation of God or gods' and was considered evil, and considered it rebellion against the 'Moral Law'.

Most atheist now say that there isn't enough evidence, or no evidence at all, to prove that God(s) exist(s). The burden of proof is on 'believers'.

Either would be Atheism but I prefer for myself an absence of belief in God. Sorry that doesn't settle your discussion. The argument among Atheists seams to be whether one must acknowledge there is a possibility of God in order to believe there is no God. It's really of no importance. It's sort of like your belief in a Banana Snake.

It is a belief that there is no god.

It is NOT an absence of belief. Because no one knows whether there is a god, both atheists and theists have beliefs surrounding the idea.

The only people with an absense of belief are full agnostics. They acknowledge that no one knows whether there is a god, so they choose not to believe in one direction or the other. Stating that we don't know isn't a statement of belief, it is one of fact - and the ONLY completely logical standpoint on the matter.

Atheism entails, minimally, the disbelief[1] in the existence of any deities.[2] It is contrasted with theism, the belief in a God or gods. Atheism is commonly defined as the positive belief that deities do not exist, or as the deliberate rejection of theism.[3][4][5] However, others define atheism as the simple absence of belief in deities[6][7][8] (cf. nontheism), thereby designating all agnostics, and people who have never heard of gods, such as newborn children, as atheists as well.[9][10] In recent years, some atheists have adopted the terms strong and weak atheism to clarify whether they consider their stance one of positive belief (strong atheism) or the mere absence of belief (weak atheism).[11][12][13]

Many self-described atheists share common skeptical concerns regarding supernatural claims, citing a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Other rationales for atheism range from the philosophical to the social to the historical. Although atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism, rationalism, and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors that all atheists adhere to.[14][15][16]

In Western culture, atheists are frequently assumed to be irreligious or non-spiritual.[17] However, some religious and spiritual beliefs, such as several forms of Buddhism, have been described by outside observers as conforming to the broader, negative definition of atheism due to their lack of any participating deities.[18][19] Atheism is also sometimes equated with antitheism (opposition to theism) or antireligion (opposition to religion), despite many atheists not holding such views

Depends on the atheist. While some do not think there is even the slightest possibility of God existing, there are others who will simply 'believe' that there isn't a god, in the same way that Christians believe there is a god.

Personally, I don't think there is a god. But I wouldn't be willing to bet that on, say, my brother's life or anything.

It's both, but one is called Weak atheism (absence of a belief in God) and the other is called strong atheism. (Belief that there is no God.)

Neither. Atheism is the belief that there almost certainly is no God.

No (intelligent) atheist would say with 100% certainty that God doesn't exist, as this would just be an unfounded assumption. Rather, we assign God the same probability of existing as Thor, Wotan, and the Great Juju at the bottom of the sea. That is to say, very low, but not quite 0%.

Atheist is from the greek word Ateo.

Teo means God.

Ateo means No God.

Therefore literally speaking the word atheist means a belief that there is no God.

It can be both, but the default is a LACK of belief.

Some people do assert a positive belief, but that's the minority of atheists. Most lack belief.
