i have about a year old chihuahua dog and the dew claws were never removed and were still attached when i bought him.
Today i noiced him licking his foot alot and so i looked and the claw has like cracked at the base and was slightly bleeding but not too much. I put some med on him and a bandaid and it looks like it stopped bleeding after it some what soaked through bandaid. Is this serious? Should i be worrying and watching him or take him to the vet?
ugh!

He probably just broke his nail. Like us, sometimes it breaks too far down and bleeds. Just make sure it does not get any worse.

If your dog will let you get close enough to have a good look at it... do it! Think of it as though it was your own nail. If it's broken and has gone deep enough it's painful right?! Usually it will get swollen and warm and can get easily infected right?! So these same things can happen to your dog. Probably once or twice a week we have someone come into the vet clinic with dogs that have broken their nails. Generally what we do is clip the nail, clean it thoroughly and bandage the entire foot. The reason we bandage up the entire foot is because it's constantly in contact with EVERYTHING... feet are not the cleanest places in the world. Keep a close eye on it, and if you get even the slightest notion that it's infected or sore take him to a vet right away! Infection spreads and you wouldn't want something as silly as a broken nail to make your dog sick.

Keep an eye on it. If it's oozing, red, feels warm to the touch, keeps bleeding, or seems off in any way, or if he starts limping, take him to the vet. It might be infected, and you don't want him to get blood poisoning.

If you don't notice anything odd again after today, he'll probably be fine.

Good luck. :)

it's not serious his feet are sore so he's licking them and they bleed for the first 2 days just alittle when because he walks it's rubbing against the skin where usually there were nails. but the skin will heal and stop bleeding. so no need to worried he'll be fine.

The nail probably needs to be removed by your vet so it doesn't get caught on something and do more damage. Then possibly talk to your vet about having them surgically removed so it doesn't happen again

He'll be just fine. I wish my Peke would have had his dewclaws removed because they always get caught on things and break and I can tell it hurts him. It will grow back in a little while. Keeping the dewclaws trimmed will help, but will not eliminate the problem.
