I know that there is a MRG and then a shaft that goes through the main thrust bearing but what I am saying is that when I look in that metal box glass windows I just see s naked jet engine and I don't see in conected to any parts. Does HP air move the MRG?

Please only answwer if you are in the Navy. You guys seem skecthy because you say props, not screws like we say in the US Navy.

DDG's have basically jet engines. They are designated as LM-2500 Gas Turbine Engines. The LM2500 gas turbines drives controllable pitch propellers through a conventional main reduction gear, shaft and clutch. A 16 stage axial flow (air travel is parallel to the shaft) compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the working mass (air). In the combustor section, fuel is added through fuel nozzles and combustion occurs. A two stage high pressure turbine on the exhaust end of the combustor drives the compressor. The combination of the compressor, combustor, and high pressure turbine are often called the gas generator. The exhaust from the high pressure turbine passes through a low pressure turbine which extracts the work required to drive the main reduction gear and ultimately the ship's propeller. The LM2500 module totally encloses the LM2500 to provide thermal and acoustic insulation. A top hatch and a side door (DD/DDG/CG) or two side doors (FFG) provide access to and viewing of the engine. The module is shock mounted to reduce hull-borne noise transmission.

Being involved in the logistics end in several overhauls of this particular engine, I remember dreaming about the parts!

If you are in the navy, and on a ddg, how do you not know?

Anyway, basically, that jet engine will have a reducing gear (basically a transmission) that connects it to the shaft, which goes under the ship and is connected to the screws.

The turbines turn the shafts to which the props are attached.

Not too unlike the drive shaft of a car

This is kind of difficult to answer not knowing what her relationship was like with her boyfriend or whether or not she even needs time to get over it. If you don't want to screw it up, I would take it slow and talk to her. If you pull a surprise kiss and she isn't ready you may cause a problem from the start. Communication is your best route. Find a cute, lighthearted way to let her know you're interested if and when she's ready. Good luck!

by the shaft, that turns against the thrust bearing.
