I would add a bit of lemon juice... I do that anyway when I make a powdered sugar icing, I love the flavor and it should help cut the sweetness.

Another option, is to make it into a cream cheese frosting by mixing it with softened cream cheese.

You should try a cream cheese frosting ... it uses both butter and cream cheese and some vanilla ..... be sure you beat it really well --- quite fluffy -- with an electric mixer .... and if you wish you can add a little cream (before you beat it) which will also cut the sweetness .... for the recipe, look either online or on the back of the cream cheese box .... always you can add things like grated orange zest and a little fresh orange juice or an orange liqueur or brandy .... sometimes in an effort to economize, people do not advise you to use enough expensive stuff like butter or cream cheese .... but it is a cake! Have some!

Add cornstarch to the powdered sugar;
1c powdered sugar
1/2 to 1 cup cornstarch (depending on how sweet you want your frosting)
Blend the two together in a blender for a few minutes

yes, you can use evaporated milk it will cute the sweet some, also use margerine instead of butter i've found that it also helps to cut the sweet some, you can also add a flavoring lemon, almond are my favorites.

You might try by adding 1 tsp of vanilla to the mix and a pinch of salt.

try not to add to much sugar and after words make sure you used all the right ingredients
maybe you didn't add to much vanilla to it
and check the bottle to see that you added the right ingredient
