Malaria is a parasitic disease carried by mosquitoes. Only certain mosquitoes carry the parasite. There are actually 4 different types of the parasite. It is important to figure out which one it is, because some are more sensitive to certain antimalarial drugs. Because of global transportation, malaria can be present anywhere ( even Alaska).
Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite. Patients with malaria typically are very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness. The parasite affects the red blood cells, the liver and spleen mainly.
Malaria can be cured with prescription drugs. The type of drugs and length of treatment depend on which kind of malaria is diagnosed, where the patient was infected, the age of the patient, whether the patient is pregnant, and how severely ill the patient is at start of treatment.
If your brother-in-law caught it in the military and is being treated. He does not need to be in a hospital unless his symptoms warrant it.
Read the link below from the CDC. It should answer all your questions.

Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. It's unlikely there will be an outbreak in the US, especially in Arizona. It is a serious illness and does require treatment, but with modern medicine, there is not too much to worry about.
My father was in WWII in the South Pacific and came home with Malaria. He lived until he was 80 and he contracted the illness nearly 60 years ago. He died of an unrelated problem.
Medical science has come a long way in 60 years. I'd say you have very little to worry about.

Yes, it's dangerous! Did you read that novl, "Final Tesament"? An attorney in it died from Malaria. The other one almost did, too, except he got cured in time. Yes, your brother and friends (maybe you, too, by no w) should be in hoptital. Yes, if you have them that close, and if you have malaria carrying mosquitos, there could be an out break.
Take preccautions, now!

Yes, malaria is dangerous, but it's spread by mosquito bites, so you don't need to worry about catching it by giving care. It is easily cured with modern medicines. They don't have to be in the hospital (maybe for a couple of days), but they should be seen.

It only spreads from mosquito bites, and as far as I know there are not mosquitoes of the right species to spread Malaria in the Southwest.
They should be in a hospital though, it is a very serious disease.

I would think that if they were diagnosed with malaria, a doctor would know where they should be and how they should be treated for it. Do they KNOW that it is definitely MALARIA or just think it might be. Either way I hope a Doctor or Doctors are involved .
