Border shootings and minor engagements are not uncommon. Especially along the DMZ in Korea about 15 years ago.

The History Channel even has a one-hour episode on some of the major fights after the cease-fire in Korea.

The old Soviet border had some good ones too. A lot of airspace violations in the good ol days of the cold war.

Here is a story right from congressional records. I remember when this one happened.
http://www.fas.org/spp/starwars/congress/1998_r/980903-cbo.htm
At dawn on January 25, 1995, researchers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched a Black Brant XII missile skyward from an island off the coast of Norway, hoping to learn more about the Northern Lights. As the rocket climbed, it was picked up by a Russian radar installation 470 miles away at Olenegursk, Russia. To the Russians, the trajectory could have been that of a Trident missile launched from a U.S. submarine. Such a single missile launch might be intended to blind Russia's early-warning radars to a massive first strike, which even then could have been just below the Earth's horizon and minutes away from disabling Russia's Strategic Rocket Forces. Within minutes, Russia's nuclear command and control system was placed on a higher level of alert, and President Yeltsin activated his "nuclear briefcase" in order to be able to issue launch orders if necessary. During that time, the fate of the United States depended on the Russian president's making the right decision even though he could not be certain that Russia was not under a surprise attack.

This story was covered again in last weeks issue of The Economist. Orders to the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces were given to launch and were violated by a Russian officer.

This is classified so you won't be able to find it anywhere, but UFOs tried to invade last year but were repelled by our F-18 hornets and our stealth F-117 fighters.

Had any of the UFOs got through, then there would have been a larger invasion. You can thank the Air Force and the government that we are not speaking Antarian right now.

Iraq is just a diversion.

***** I have adjusted this answer to say to those below that to start a conventional war, troop movements have to happen, and we can see from space. If someone launched a nuclear missile, it would have to be destroyed and the world would know about that too. So, no to your question.

I absolutely agree there could be situations that could put us on the brink of war that the public is not privy to. All it takes is a computer glitch, a training simulation gone wrong. There are a million scenarios that could exist putting us into or on the brink of war. I believe the public gets such a watered down version of what really happens that we will never know unless the situation is unrecoverable. Think of it like this. To the government we are children. Do you tell your children every detail, every danger they are exposed to? It would frighten them so much they wouldn't be able to cope. We tell them what they need to know as they need/are able to know it. We like to think we want to know everything. I hate conspiracy as much as anyone but fully recognize there is a world of stuff going on that's so ugly if I truly knew it I would be sick about it all the time. So yes, it's possible.
