You'd have to look at an electricity bill to see how much you're being charged 'per kilowatt hour' (kWh) or contact your supplier. This will tell you how much it costs to run a one kW appliance for one hour.

Your globe is only 15W so you'd need to multiply the cost by 0.015.

If for example it cost 3.9c per kWh (the 2004 average in NSW) then the cost would be 0.0585c per hour.

I looked up the price of electricity in AU and it's a lot cheaper than here in the UK (about one fifth of the price), do you think you could send me some?

the rating of the globe is the power it consumes, not the light output. a normal 15 watt globe puts out precious little light, so if using the "power saving" devices gives you the light equivalent of a 60 or even 100 watt tungsten lamp then you save 45 or 85 watts of energy every hour by using it. using special globes everywhere in the house will save you enough money to buy a pint mate!

If you run the bulb for 1 hr, you've used 15 W*hr of electricity.

The cost of a kilowatt-hr in the US runs somewhere on the order of $US0.06 to $US0.20, depending on the circumstances.

all this talk about global warming and saving electricity, has me thinking.

I live in an average size community. The community does its part by saving on electricity. Any one who's electric bill is past due gets shut off. In the winter they can not shut you off, so they put on a restrict or. A friend of mine works for the city, and she SIDS when they put on the restrict or. It will keep your furnace running and that is it. Any other use of electricity will trip the restrict or and it cost 50 dollars cash to have it reset. My neighbor is on oxygen. Very sick and very little money. The city put a restrict or on her meter this winter. When she tried to use her oxygen it tripped the re stricter. Of course she did not have the money to pay to have it reset. I only know this because I saw them putting on the restrict or or limiter, and my friend who works for the city told me. To piss off the city, I ran extension cords from my home to hers, so she had power and stuff. Our homes are very close. I gave her some electric heaters also. The city tried to tell me what I was doing was illegal. Nothing came about it....I could have just paid her bill for her, but I wanted to prove a point. This women was on oxygen to keep her alive.
