Just ask him if the 2 of you are going to wear the same thing to both proms, or if you're going to have 2 different outfits. That's all I can think of for a cute idea, sorry.

get 10 balloons and in one of them put a card that says "Will you go to the prom with me?" Blow up the balloons and make him pop them until he gets it.....Seems cute, funny, and interesting! =) Plus not as much of a pressure as asking face to face =)
