Cause - submitting to temptation because of our fallen nature caused by Original sin.
Effect - separation from the community of believers who are affected by the sinful act and separation from God and his redeeming work.
There are also social sins but that is another topic.

you lie/steal, you're no longer credible -- untrustworthy
you kill, you're a murderer -- phys/emotional pain
you commit adultery, you're sexually immoral -- stds, distrust
