Hi there, i noticed you have been copping flack over your question.I asked for help with my dogs and it disappoints me when people judge on the basis of their own assumption. If you dont have anything helpful to say dont bother. In saying this i have huskies and they are sled dogs, but people tend to think thats cruel too.So all i can say to help is Ask a dog trainer and see what they have to say,im sure they will help. They helped my dogs. They were fine at pulling just really bad at steering!! Good luck

All big dogs don't mind a harness if you want a sled pulling dog get a siberian husky they love to do that! also if you put pressure on it and the dog freaks out then maybe you weigh to much! Also some dogs backs can't handle to much weight so you need to be careful about it and don't be someone your not my grandfather has a way with animals even wild ones some people are like that but you should never force an animal to do something its not going to do in other words you want a sled pulling dog get a siberian husky cause a golden retriver is not and will NOT DO IT!
Also one more thing what you want to hear is not truth and no one is going to lie especially for the sake of the animal.

While pulling a sled isn't what Goldens are bred for, they can do it. I see many Goldens ski-jouring with their humans and seeing to love it. Never mind what people say, try it. If your Golden doesn't "get it", at least you tried. Just don't force him or make him pull too much weight, but you already knew that, I bet.

Sorry I don't have specific instructions.

If he doesn't want to do it why force him? Maybe you should try putting the harness on and you pull the sled and let him sit on the sled.

also, after you get him into the harness, you could tie a string to a stick and tie a really good treat to the string them hold the treat in front of his face. this is if you are sitting in the sled. then, he'll automatically move forward to get the treatand he'll oull the sled in the process. make sure to reward him in the end profusely though. all the best!

Okay, I wont say something you dont want to hear because sounds like you have hear it alot here.
Okay, I think treats do wonders for training a dog to do anything. Positive reinforcement is the key. Give him a treat that he LOVES when you put the harness on. Then encourage him to take one step. Treat. Another step. Treat. Tell him he is being good in an excited voice and he'll want to please you. May take alot of repeating and alot of patience but you might be able to do it. Good luck

I would suggest first getting him used to the harness slowly..then after he is used to that..attach the cart to his leash with no weight in it and walk along with him by his side as to distract him...this will take a long time I would think to get him used to but it sounds pretty cool. I understan your grandpa did it..so if your a patient person like he was you can teach your dog anything just be patient and reward your dog when he is a good doggy..have fun!

Goldens are not sled dogs!!! They are hunting dogs they swim, they love their masters, they are loyal, they are smart!
If you dog doesn't like the harness why are you forcing him to wear it.
Well that should tell you volumes now shouldn't
it!!!
Look I dont know what kind of dog your grandfather had but Goldens don't do pulling sleds! That's not in their breeding. I'm sorry but it just isn't.

Start with the harness. Get him used to it and liking it. Reward him a lot when he is wearing it. Then, start putting a very small amount of resistance on the harness. Gradually increase the resistance, this is just YOU pulling back.

when he is used to it and pulling against you, attach something small to it, like a log. You hold him and walk him with it, rewarding him when he is acting more confident.

Gradually increase the size of the things attached to the harness.

And never, ever let anything attached to the harness hit him if he stops suddenly, or you will never get him to pull.
