I was doing genenology connecting trees. I know they made some errors. Anyways, I think this part is another error but want to make sure. I know the person was a Captain in the civil war. That is true, I have a copy of the obituary that names him and his wife. bla/bla.
I'm looking up his info. The question is what is the chance of an immigrant being an officer in the civil war. ( I believe they got his country of birth switched with his wife)

You've got more work to do, but don't dismiss the possibility. Immigrants did pitch in in that ghastly war, both sides. And an officer is an officer. I've seen non-native born cadets enumerated on census at West Point.

One major goal of mine when doing research is to insure that I have ALL possible sources for any "fact". And truthfully, a majority of the time, if I have 2 "sources", they will conflict.. so I go for 3rd, 4th, etc. Given the dates of the Civil war, the first thing I would ask, is whether you have used all available census files? You would also need to see how many of his siblings can be verified, and what those records show.
I notice mentioning "they" made some errors. Unfortunately, I find that many online files have NO original research... one person makes a mistake, 30 people download the tree, and it takes an act of congress to find the right information with a "real" source (not someone else's work).

Most Euros in those days were immigrants ,
We were still in the process of taking this land from the Indians , & the civil war was only about 75 years after the American Revolution.
Many states west of the Mississippi were Not even states yet.
Sooo, it was very likely for an immigrant to be an officer.

There were some troops made up of a group of immigrants. Occasionally one of them who was an officer in his country of origin would serve as an officer over his own immigrant troop. So, it's possible but rare.

A major portion of the country were immigrants at that time in our history.

All of my great grandparents were born in the mid 1800's and in foreign countries.
