I got some bomber-like lures at an auction the other day and i am trying to figure out how deep they will dive at 1 mph for trolling walleye. They have large bills on them so i assume they will dive deep. Is there any type of equation (example: 1/2 inch of bill for 10 feet of depth) to help me figure this out. I live on lake erie and lure depth can be critical! THANX!

Large bills will dive deeper, but wobble harder too.
I use a Rapala and put a slip sinker very Small on the top bill through the line. It doesn't interfere with your action and you get more depth.

I have also drilled a 1/4 in che hole just adjacent behind the bill underneath the Rapala about 1/4 inch deep. Then melted some lead and poured it in there. That works real good.

try this.........
tie on ur lures and cast them into water that u know the depth.if ur lure hits bottom, try again in a different spot with deeper water.
after u figure out the running depth of the lure u can manipulate it further.if u want to get deeper u can add suspend-a-dots to the bottom of the lure just behind the lip.this will allow u to get deeper and also make the lure suspend for those suspended fish.
also u can change ur line, smaller line will allow u to get the lures deeper and heavier line will bring them back up.

Each fishing lure will react differently depending on the following:type of lure, speed either trolled or reeled in. the best thing is to do is tune in yourself to what is going on at the time with wind /weather /waves etc

You can go with a down-rigger, that has a depth meter. I believe a lot of different brands come with them, I've used a friends Cannon (brand name) down rigger that has one. Also, there is fishing line on the market that shows depth on line with color coding (each different color represents yards). You can get this at just about any tackle shop. Also, ya' can go with Cabela's or Bass Pro and order online (draw-back on this is S&H). Good luck and "Fish On"...
