Would have been nice to have a link to the story or some "facts"...
As someone pointed out, the Marine Corps has no doctors... and use Navy Corpsmen as "medics". Now, you say that the docs are only APPROVING their return... so !! That is a medical judgement !! Is CNN reporting that the doctors are making unsound judgements ??
Now, if you've recovered from your wounds and meet Physical Qualifications... you CAN go back !! I flew 12 hours after having 23 stitches in my wrist, thigh, and face from a AAA round during the first Gulf War...

The role or mission of military medical units is to preserve the fighting force.
The Wartime Medical Mission: Conserve the Fighting Strength
The AMEDD's wartime mission is to support the line commander by conserving the fighting strength so that he may accomplish the military mission. The AMEDD's wartime mission then encompasses the following objectives:[2] (1) save lives; (2) clear the battlefield of casualties; (3) provide state-of-the-art care; (4) return a soldier to duty as rapidly as possible or evacuate him back to a higher echelon of care for more definitive treatment; and (5) provide the most benefit to the maximum number of personnel.

There was a soldier that lost some toes and he wanted back, so the doctors fited hime with a prosthetic and he was good to go. Police officers have been shot and went back to duty. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened with soldiers. Also a broken leg could be considered a serious injury, but once healed they go back.

I didn't see the CNN report, but the Marine Corps doesn't have doctors. The Corps are under the Department of the Navy. They use Navy doctors. Based on that fact, I'm positive either you misinterpreted the report, or the report is misleading.

Since you are obviously not a member of our armed forces, you wouldn't understand why some injured (not seriously injured) would want to return to their brothers in arms. I got shrapnel shot in '70 over in Nam but it was not serious enough to stop me from returning to the unit. Why? Because you do not leave your buddies behind. Period. Look out pal, if you're young, you are on the selective service roster.

CNN is a Ted Turner invention. Are you sure you want to believe anything they say? That's almost as bad as Fox news, an invention of Rupert Murdock. Holy cow, Batman! {Make it sensational so we can sell more advertising. It's not the truth? Well, dress it up and run it anyway. What are they gonna do, sue us?}

What CNN isn't tell us is that Soldiers want to be back in their units with their friends and comrades... I'm sure the ones being approved to go back WANT to go back. Soldiers and Marines aren't mindless drones, they are professionals w/a sense of honor and commitment not seen in the civilian sector.
