When first beginning track, does the right type of shoe make you a better/faster runner, or do they really not make that much of a difference, unless you are running for time? I know it's more about endurance and the right techniques, but are running shoes really necessary or will regular tennis shoes do when you're first starting out?

Shoes are the most important part of avoiding injuries. Get a good pair that are best for your feet, what you run, etc. Go to a running store where the people actually help you pick the best show for you.

You use the equipment for the sport, you wouldn't use a javelin in the shot put.
Get the proper running shoes or at least RUNNING shoes.Tennis shoes are for tennis, running shoes are for running, like basketball shoes are for basketball.
Shoes don't make you faster, training, experience etc does. Shoes helps, in a race you'll need spikes if you are in competitive(championships/olympics etc) races where a fraction of a sec matters. When 1st starting out you don't need spikes, but something other than tennis shoes will be a lot better.

Shoes are the most important part of your dress for running. I've had several running problems, (injuries, stability, running form, etc) and I found out that about half of them were related to the shoe I was wearing because it was the wrong size, or too worn out, or the wrong kind for me. Shoes make a HUGE difference!!

Shoes are vital to a track and field althete. When warming up and doing drills in practice, its ok to wear a supportive pair of tennis shoes. Once you start to work on your event (ie 100m or 400m), you should put on your sprinting shoes to help you get use to the feel and lightness of the shoe during the run. Wearing the spikes in practice helps you run better for practice so that your body is ready during competition. Shoes definately make a difference in speed. Try to run 100m in regular tennis shoes and record your time. Then after a good amount of rest try to run it in your spikes. I guarantee you will have a faster turn over and a lower time mainly because the shoes are lighter and designed to improve foot speed. Good luck!

You definitely NEED running shoes. They might not make you go faster, but your feet need the support and cushioning that regular tennis shoes won't provide. If you try to run in tennis shoes, your toes might get blistered. Your feet need extra room when you run because your feet actually swell and get a little bigger when running, not enough that you would notice, but enough to cause some blistering problems. Also a lighter shoe could possibly make you faster. It would only be a subtle difference, but you might at least "feel" faster while wearing a light, comfortable running shoe. I recommend Asics. They're my favorite brand, and they're very comfortable. Good luck with your running!

I think a pair of shoes you are use to and broken in all ready are best.. if you want to get into a better pair wair them a little at a time and work them a littl euntil they are broken in.. you dont want blisters... wear em a few hours a day until they are fully broken in... find some that have a good arch suport inside the shoe and ankle support... will prevent ankle roles (very very bad) that'd put you out of track for a logn time...

My daughter was a champion runner in high school. She thought the weight of the running shoe was extremely important.

good shoes are vital to running. you must have supportive shoes. if you do not you can end up with shin splints and knee heel ankle injuries from impact. DO NOT get Nike shocks or any shoe similar they do not provide any support and cause the injuries to worsen. if you are interested to get a good pair of running shoes got to a running specialty store. yes the shoes are more expensive but they will prevent any injury.

what i'll do is run for practice with some sorta heavy tennus shoes and when you are ready for a track meet you need some light Asics track shoes, there the best, and yes there important, because you get a great start and it helps you with traction when you go fast on a turn, but ya if you do this your be a quick one, i did this and i got my letters, =)

good luck

Shoes are the more important running equipment you will own. They wont make you faster, but they could keep you running injury free
