On tap, Guinness Draught is injected with a surge of nitrogen before serving, which gives the beer its creamy head and smooth texture. Unlike carbonated liquids, nitrogenated liquids cannot merely be canned or bottled without quickly going flat or spoiling, so Guinness patented a "widget" process to inject the gas into its retail versions of Draught upon opening.
Keep in mind, though, that canned and bottled Guinness are not one and the same. Canned Guinness' widget is an orb at the bottom of the can that provides the nitrogen surge immediately throughout the entire can. Bottled Guinness uses a widget somewhat spear-like in shape near the top of the bottle which only releases gas when it comes in contact with the liquid. The widget in bottled Guinness is designed for multiple contacts with small volumes of the stout, i.e. drinking straight from the bottle. Its performance during continuous exposure to liquids is less than optimal, and as a result many believe it to be inferior to the canned version: the latter is believed to provide a more authentic recreation of Guinness' signature pour.

The widget is a plastic moulded device that sits on the top of the contents of each can of GUINNESS® Draught. When the can is opened, a small amount of beer and nitrogen, trapped in the widget, is forced out through the beer, which creates the famous creamy head that you find on a pint of GUINNESS® Draught served in a pub. The widget gives GUINNESS® Draught in cans the taste and texture of a pub-poured pint at home. In GUINNESS® Draught in bottles, the clever little ’rocket’ widget floats free in the beer to refresh the creamy head of your GUINNESS® Draught with each swig you take from the bottle.

A floating widget is found inside cans of beer where it collects nitrogen from the fluid and forecefully releases it upon opening, creating a foamy head in imitation of draught beer.

It's called a widget. Its for when you pour your beer out into a glass it's supposed to be the same as if you had gotten it straight form the tap, since it is a special process that it goes thru to get to you.
