1976-1980 Dodge Aspen, or Plymouth Volare, with a slant six motor and an automatic transmission they could come with or have added side quarter window louvers, front and rear spoilers...
they can be had fir under $1000.00 insurance is cheap they do high 20's to low 30's MPG
Very durable and are not damaged as easily as newer cars
Rare 1979 and 1980 Duster option Volares are pretty easy to find and fool alot of people because most only know the 1970 - 1976 versions...(for 1977 & 1978 there were no /dusters made period) the Duster name returned for the last time 1979 and 1980 on a rear wheell drive car...

A Toyota Corolla S. The "S" is has a sportier look to it that a 16 year old would enjoy, but still has the practical price tag of a Corolla. From a parent's point of view, the Corolla is also a very safe vehicle, and is economical with the gas mileage. Plus, as long as the vehicle is maintained, it will have a long lifetime with very few mechanical problems.

Don't laugh, now. An old style Volkwagen Beetle is the most fun, reliable, gas sippingest car in the world. They can go almost anywhere, roads or not. Easy to drive and work on. Goes a long way between fill-ups. Can haul 4 people or 5 teens fairly well. Keeps resale value if not real abused, and they can take punishment within reason.
Best little car I ever owned that wasn't fast. Mexico made new 'old style' beetles until the new beetles came out.
