It gave what were in effect religious fanatics an escape hatch from the religious wars in Europe. I think that is where American Religion gets it's tremendous persecution complex from. Just an idea.

The religious settlements were actually pretty late. The first people into America were involved in commercial ventures, Furs in new york, Lumbering in Maine, Tobacco in Virginia and Rice in South Carolina.
When the religious colonies started to happen they did not come here for religious tolerance. They were totally intolerant and there were good reasons why most of them were hated in Europe. They likely killed more of each other than the Indians killed of them all.
There was a very good reason why the Constitution demanded separation of Church and State. It had nothing to do with protecting nonreligious people. It was to protect the religious people from each other.

Native Americans were forced to abandon their beliefs, which were around for CENTURIES longer than the Pilgrim counterparts, or else they would die. Same goes for people who were enslaved, like the Africans; or the Mayans, the Incas.

People fled from Europe to escape religious prosecution, just to force their beliefs on the Native Americans.

All-loving, far from it, be the Christian faith of yesterday.

Pilgrims at first went for religious freedom only to force their religions on the natives. Cruel Irony, no?
