I have had a black toenail for well over 4 or 5 months, it does not go away! I had it tested about a month ago and it is NOT fungus.. what are other possiblities of why i have a black toenail. It hurts to wear shoes and even when i'm not wearing shoes my toe starts to hurt like a knife is going through it and when i walk i feel it in my bone (as weird as that sounds) please someone help me the doctors in the military aren't that helpful with this situation!

we are stationed in the netherlands so seeing a doctor nonmilitary is out of the question.. i don't know what to do because the military docs pretty much gave up after the fungal test came back negative

Are you a runner? Lots of runners get black toenails from pounding the pavement. Also, are your shoes or socks too tight?

The only other reason besides a fungus would be that you injured your toenail. Did you drop something heavy on it? Or perhaps rammed it into some furniture. More than likely, the color is due to blood being pooled under the nail, as will occur with an injury. It will hurt for awhile. I would go back to the Doctor you saw on base and ask for a referral to a Podiatrist (foot specialist), who would be more competent in treating this. By the way, if the injury was bad enough, your nail will probably fall off. You probably won't grow another one but that's ok. You can live just fine without one. Good luck.

My cousin dropped a hammer on his toe and the toenail went black and then fell off. Did you drop something on it? If it stings, you might have a splinter or something stuck in your toe. Keep bugging the doctors until you get an answer, it's not supposed to turn black...

I just watched something on the TV about that. They said it could be a type of melinoma cancer. I would get it checked by a doctor for that.

You've bruised your toe and nail. You may even have a bloodclot...go see a doctor... nonmilitary.

is the skin underneath your nail bruised? maybe that's why the nail appears black.
