Bipolar is another term for Manic Depression. You are either manic and very actively animated or you are so depressed you can't get out of bed. There is no in between for manic depressives. It can be controlled with medication, usually lithium or some other drug to balance the chemicals in the brain. It is difficult to cope with a manic depressive unless they are on medication.

Bipolar is a mental disease that is treated with medication to mask the symptoms. There is no known cure for bipolar. The most dramatic symptom of this disease is that the patient has periods of real high energy, loud talking, inappropriate laughter follow by periods of very low lows. It is really hard for a family to cope with it, but it is also difficult for the patient to cope with it. I guess what I'm saying is to have patients and work with the doctors alot.

Bipolar disease is a chemical imbalance. It is hereditary. It can be controlled by medication and therapy, but it is never cured. I am the mother of a bipolar son and it has not always been easy with him. We have tried many medicine "cocktails" over the years and he is on a good combination right now. A person with Bipolar disease must accept the fact that they will probably always have to take medicine to lessen the effects of the highs and lows. A family must just love and accept that individual and try to learn as much as possible about the disorder.
