G-d is nothing more than a title, but...as Jews, we are taught to have absolute respect for G-d...His title...His identity...His Name.
One of the 10 Commandments says not to use His Name lighty or disrespectfully, so we go out of our way to honor & reverence his name & give Him & it the dignity worthy of such a Name...even tho we know it's just a title.

As a general rule of thumb, practicing Jews do not write the name God because of the laws delivered by Moses which are found in Deuteronomy 12:3-12:4. In this passage, the Jews are instructed to destroy anything and everything associated with their rival’s gods, and they are not to let this happen to their own God. Writing G-d instead of God is one way to prevent others from destroying the name of God.

Jews interpret the law given by Moses as a prohibition against transcribing the name of God, because they feel that if God is recorded onto a piece of paper, there is the possibility that the name will be disrespected or destroyed in some way. The general concern with writing G-d in its true form is that it might be erased, defaced by being crossed out or scribbled upon, torn, thrown in the trash, or ravaged in some other way. Writing G-d instead of God communicates the writer’s idea effectively, but since G-d is incomplete, there is no risk of defacement. The Jews have other names for their creator besides G-d, including Hashem, YHVH, Elohim, and El Shaddai, which are also not written in their complete form.

Jewish tradition...

There seem to be lots of mis-information being thrown at you on this one, so I'll explain a little further.

Exodus 20:7 says, “Do not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will find guilty anyone who misuses his name." This is one of the 10 commandments, so it is viewed as one of the most important parts of the Law of Moses.

Many Jews consider it misuse to say, or even write or type the name except in temple worship in Jerusalem - and there is not a temple there right now. There is even a "name" for the Hebrew name of God. The name itself is called the TETRAGRAMMATON... meaning 4 letter word.

hebrews, when writing God (or Yahweh) would leave out a vowel, making it G-d and Y-hweh. THis is because they had so much reverance for God that they would not say his name or write it out all the way. I admire that. and you know, maybe I'll start doing that. Everybody is allowed to say God, but it is becuase of teh amount of respect and reverance they have for him that they write it so: G*d.
G*D BLESS AMERICA AND HER INHABITANTS!!!!!!

In some religions, it is taboo to speak or spell out the name of God, even in using a broad term like "God".They omit a letter in order to avoid spelling it out.

It is Jewish tradition. They sincerely feel it is wholly disrespectful to say or type God's name or title (God).

People of the Jewish faith believe that the word "God" is holy. So they eliminate the vowels, just as they did with YHWH.
