Ok assume you mean Linux.

Linux is 100% free to use so the easy part is the cost = £0

there are lots of different versions of Linux and all are tailored to specific needs.

try www.linux.com and click on Distributions. here you will be able to decide which is right for you.

I think Mandriva is probably the easiest to use and can be found at http://www.mandriva.com/

The good thing about linux some distributions can be run from a cd so do not need to be installed. This is ideal if you want to try it for a while but be able to go back to xp at any time.

Best thing to do would be to get a Live CD from Ubuntu. It's totally free, and if you don't live in the US, they'll probably send you 10 rather than 1, as the postage is the same for them. All you do is go to http://ubuntu.shipit.com and ask. They send you the CDs. Give the rest (if they send more) to your friends.

If you like it, either install it on your computer, or pay between £15 and £30 for a 2-4gb Flash USB drive and run it from there, storing stuff on your computers hard disk.

Basically, the previous answers are correct. Do your research. Make sure you know what your doing. Installing Linux will require a fundamental knowledge of operating systems, partitioning (for dual boots), and any software or drivers you'll want/need to use.
