There are several plants grown for their fiber. A few are
* Jute (widely used, cheapest fiber after cotton)
* Flax (which produces linen)
* Ramie
* Hemp
* Kenaf
* Abacá
* Nettles
*Hops
*Milkweed
I would guess that flax would be the one closest to cotton in that it is grown for both it's oil and fiber. It gives a higher yield for oil than cotton and a finer fiber. Jute gives a fiber similar to cotton but not the oil.
