I am using Vista, but then I'm a computer scientist. I would suggest that anyone who is not very technically savvy wait a while before jumping into Vista. It is not ready for primetime. There are bugs. In addition, the user interface is very different from any other Windows interface which will require a lot of learning. Finally, Vista is very secure. It is so secure that it is nearly impossible to get anything done at all, like installing new software. You can't add favorites without a fight. The User Account Control is the cause and disabling it defeats the purpose of having Vista in the first place.

I choose XP.

From the looks of it, XP is becoming Windows 98 while Vista is becoming ME: a temporary OS for the people with home versions to chew on until Microsoft reveals the OS they meant to bring out. Why else would Microsoft provide support for the home versions of Vista for only 5 years while support for XP will continue until late in 2014?

I would say XP, at least as of now. Vista is still getting kinks worked out in it, and requires a lot of power to run smoothly. If you have a powerful computer (2+Ghz, 1+GB RAM, 128+MB GPU), are a little adventurous, and willing to put up with problems, I would go with Vista. Otherwise I would go with XP, with the option to upgrade to Vista in around a year.

One of the problems I have with Vista, and had with Internet Explorer 7, is that some things are just not compatible, period. For example, I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 and soon afterward needed to use the live chat feature on an ISP's website. The chat client would only run in Internet Explorer (not Firefox, Opera, etc), but was incompatible with version 7 of Internet Explorer - I had no way to use it, other than using another computer. Right now drivers for my MP3 player are not available for Vista, so I am presented with a similar problem.

There's an old saying that goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". That applies to XP as opposed to Vista....stick with XP at LEAST until Microsoft comes out with the first service-pack for Vista. Right now there's just too many incompatibilities with Vista's ability to run programs that run fine under XP.

XP is reliable and don't need to pay for something I don't really need yet. Besides Vista doesn't run on some motherboards or hardware combination. All my programs run fine on XP and I don't want to risk to find out they don't run on vista. Vista is too new I better let run a few years so they can fix any possible bugs, and that more software be made compatible with vista.

IF it's a brand new machine you might as well get Vista, I have it and am not having troubles. If however you are just going to upgrade an older version, stick with your XP. Everyone I haev heard teh complaints from has upgraded and has to worry about compatibility issues.

Right now I would be buying XP, in 6 months it would be Vista.Just have alook around here to see how many questions are coming from people who need unobtainable Vista drivers. I would NEVER go with a brand new OS apart from testing a beta on a spare machine.
