If they are fortunate enough to get a new home where they are well cared for and given the attention that they need for the first few weeks in a new home, once they realise they are safe with their new owners and can feel secure in their new environment they should be ok, they may be a little depressed at first especially if they were with their owner for a very long time but only time can help and if they are happy in their new home they will adjust.

I don't know if it's possible to put a timescale on grief. I guess it will depend upon the personality of the individual cat and how closely it was bonded with it's owner.

Such a major change in a cat's lifestyle, can be a major source of distress to them, to the point of making them ill. So if you know of a cat that recently lost their owner, keep an eye on them. The web site below gives really helpful advice on cats and how they display their grief.

It could be many years ( or the rest of their lives) for them to find a new owner who will love them.
