People fear what they don't know. They are afraid, mostly because of the lies told by anti-Mormons, that the Mormons want t take over or something.
As for "worshipping" in the temple, the temple is not for regular worship. If you are not a member of our church, if you don't believe as we do, the temple rites would be less than meaningless to you. Because what we believe and what we do in the temple is so sacred and holy, we don't want just anyone coming in, possibly opening our beliefs to mockery and derision. Ask any Mormon if you can go to church with them on Sunday and they will be more than happy for you to attend. Our temples are not open on Sundays, so all our members can attend regular worship services.
If one wants to know what we really believe, and why, go to www.lds.org and www.mormon.org .

There two main reasons I can think of.
1. The term cult is used in so many ways that almost any group could be considered a cult.
2. People are ignorant of the believes of a Mormon or uninformed and just use the term because other people use the term.
Look at Bob's and Maxxed50's answers and it proves my second point.

ROTFLMAO.... stick with the preparation of the pope.... did you be conscious of no longer something about the Rcc?!?!? apparently as that makes no experience in any way!!! there are different tiers of a "cult" heck a community watch should be considered a cult. some are strong and some are undesirable. seem up the be conscious in a dictionary - no longer spell verify - definitely study the meaning OF the be conscious. catholics can question the pope.... there have in person-friendly words been 2 circumstances in like one hundred fifty YEARS that there replaced into doctrine conventional that replaced into considered infalliable. you should nonetheless question it even if.... you at the instantaneous are not evaluating apples to apples on your "guidelines" so once you definitely have a leg to face on.... come on again. EDIT -- once you've a job or belong to ANY corporation, there's a pacesetter someone who lives and breathes between you who LEADS.... it really is called ANY corporation in the different case they doesn't be prepared. the place of work of the papacy has been round about 2000 years a twin of the RCC so..... benedict has no longer been around the completed time - he's not immortal. maximum individuals do not even be conscious of of your thomas individual because it really is TOO secretive. the completed international is regularly occurring with of of Pope Benny because it really is elementary understanding it extremely is countless the annoying situations. even as no longer each thing is publically traded (so that you should communicate) baptizing people in the call of a few useless individual you want to herald your planet..... it really is such issues as that that confuse the traditional human.

A cult is not to be determined by whether the people in that group are nice or not. The fact is that there are certain basic beliefs accepted by most Christians, whether they be Catholic or Orthodox or Protestant (which itself includes Lutherans, Methodists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Baptists, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, etc), Coptic, or if there be any other major expression of Biblical Christianity. The fact is the theology of Mormonism is not in accord with any of these. The teaching that God was once a man who evolved into a God is rejected by all of these, and this is just one of the teachings of Mormonism that has no basis in, and is contrary to the teachings of the Bible.

Try walking into any Mormon Temple - just try it. If you can't gain access, you will see why they are considered a cult religion.
Ask your Mormon friends that you want to worship with them in a Mormon Temple. Some of them are not allowed to enter a Mormon Temple. Ask them why?
{EDIT} I asked if I could go into the Washington Mormon Temple and was immediately refused. I would welcome a Mormon into any Eastern Orthodox church BUT I was not allowed to enter a Temple. Why would I make that up?
{EDIT2} Regardless if Mormon Temples are open on Sundays or Tuesdays, I like to enter a Mormon temple just as I've entered Catholic, Lutheran and non-denominational houses of worship. Why would I deride or disrespect the Mormon religion UNLESS the Mormons had something to hide. I did not see any posts defending Joesph Smith and there would be no Mormon faith if not for Brigham Young.

I think most Christians believe in the King James Bible. But Mormons don't. Now let me ask: Why did Joseph Smith talk into his magic hat to quote the Mormon scriptures?

Mormons believe half-truths.
The angel Moroni was suppose to have revealed to Joseph Smith the spot where the golden plates lay buried which contained the history of ancient America and Mormons believe these plates were in reformed-Egyptian characters and were translated by Smith and unschooled farmer. He was supposedly given a pair of transparent stones through which the translation appeared to him in English. As he translated, a helper wrote it down and Joseph was always separated by a screen curtain. Joseph started the Church when he was 25 yo. God told him to settle in Missouri in 1831. Smith was accused of many misdeeds, including gross immorality and was arrested in Illinois. A mob stoned the jail and killed both Joseph and his brother Hyrum.
They believe everyone preexisted, they believe Adam does not have a fallen nature, that specific acts, not man's basic nature is sin, believe God as a resurrected, physical man is literal Father of Jesus, and that heaven is divided into 3 kingdoms, celestrial, terrestrial and telestial - a place for almost everyone.
They also believe that the Holy Spirit is a separate God from Father and Son. To be born again you have to be baptized into the LSD church, and believe man must earn his place in heaven etc. etc. etc.

I really don't know. I am Mormon myself, and I don't see any reason to consider Mormons or any other groups cults. Some people are just against us for who-knows-why. And actually, instead of denying people, we welcome them to come worship with us. So Bob, you are totally wrong, and you can stop making stuff up.

Joseph Smith was a farmer who SWORE that an angel appeared to him with golden tablets in his field. These tablets laid out the Mormon faith for him to preach. He was only barely able to read them in the first place and the time of the event was in the 1800's and no one else saw the angel but him. Hum,...that might be one pretty good reason. Now that I think about it; that's pretty much all the reason I'd need to call it a cult.

Almost everyone knows to beware of the Jehovah’s Witness; but, the Mormons are different, they lure people in by claiming to be a Christian organization, and by their claim to be family oriented, and their friendly masquerade of kindness and love. Keep in mind they only "claim" to be a Christian organization. The reason they say this is because they think that if you believe in Christ then you are a Christian, when in fact this is not true at all, because Satan and his demons believe in Christ, but that does not make them Christians now does it. They claim this while secretly in there doctrine the call our Christian churches the whore of Babylon, and Christian preachers, heretic disciples of Satan. They believe that we are the occult and not them. The Mormons are very powerful in the world today and have Power because of their wealth. The Marriott Hotel chain is owned by the Mormon Church, and there is Mormon Literature in every room. Mormons are very affluent with the dead. They claim to be visited regularly by dead family members. They are being deceived By demons. They actually believe that through prayer, these people can receive salvation even in death. They associate very much with the dead. The Pastor of the First Satanic Church, and the author of the Satanic Bible, is Anton LaVey. In his Satanic Bible, LaVey lists, under "In fernal Names," one of them as "Mormo," which is the God of the living dead, and the king of the Ghouls. The followers of Mormo, are called Mormons. Take that and chew on it a while. Coincidence? I don’t think so. The Mormon Church is the owner of the largest Genealogy center in the world, and they deal directly with the dead ancestors of the living. Mormon missionaries have had a hard time witnessing in China, and it is not because of it’s communists rule. It is because the word Mormon in Chinese means Gates of Hell.
Now let me give you a little History on the Mormon Church. In 1821 a young treasure seeker named Joseph Smith claimed to have had a vision from God. First he said it was from Jesus, then he said from Jesus and many angels, and then he said that it was from Jesus and God the Father. This is what they go by today. Mormons claim that Joseph Smith was visited by Jesus and God the father; but the Bible tells us that no man can look upon the face of God and live. He was also visited by a so-called angel named Moroni, who supposedly told him about a secret manuscript, written on golden plates, telling the true Gospel. And that he was to translate this into the Book of Mormon. Let me truly begin here and tell you what they believe. They believe that long ago from an unknown god ,and goddess, was born a man named Elohim who was later born to human parents, and he lived his life and became a god like his father. He is also claimed to have fathered many children. Two of them in particular are named: one is Jesus, and the other is Lucifer. They decided to put all of Elohim’s many children on a planet, and that the planet needed a savior the bid, for it came down to Jesus and to Lucifer. But Jesus won out because he had unselfish reasons. But then Lucifer revolted and turned many of Elohim’s children against him, and they were banished to the earth, never to have physical bodies. The people who were on the side of Jesus were very light skinned. And the people who remained neutral in the battle, their skinned turned black and this is the Mormon explanation for the black race. They believe after that battle the people were sent to Earth, and Elohim came to earth, and had sex with Mary, and that is how Jesus came to Earth. They also believe that Jesus took three wives while on Earth: Mary, Martha, and Mary Magdalene. They also believe that Jesus fathered many Children during his time on Earth, and that Joseph Smith their founder was a direct descendant of Jesus. They believe that after a life of Mormonism and a Mormon marriage has taken place, that when they die they will become gods too. They also believe that they will have their own planet, and many goddess wives, and their job for eternity will be to populate the planets. I know how far fetched this all sounds, but these people actually believe this mess. Mormonism is a sex cult. And we never would have guessed any of this from those sweet family-oriented Mormon commercials on TV. People please be aware of these dangerous occults. These people are lost and on there way to Hell. They desperately need Jesus.
