you have to cut the hair above where the hair starts to split in order to eliminate split ends. Instead of cutting it, assuming you don't mind different lengths of hair (read shaggy hair), you can get (or give yourself) a split end treatment.
Simply twist 1/8 inch thicknesses of hair to the ends and snip off the flyaways. Continue all over your head until the splits are gone.
Cutting your hair will keep it from getting split ends, and give it the appearance of being healthier, but hair, like fingernails are dead cells once they grow out from your body and once it is in bad condition you can only cut the bad condition off, not revive it.
What you can do is keep better care of it in future and hope that it won't deteriorate so much.
Also, how long your hair grows and how quickly it grows is genetic. You can't make it grow longer or quicker than you're DNA dictates.

Cutting, or trimming, I like to say will vary but normally not by much. Most of the time a good solid 1/4 inch to a half inch is fine. But you need the whole haircare thing going on to get it all real healthy and manageable. Hair will not grow faster if cut. Trimming it does not keep it healthy alone. A good diet helps but depending on your type of hair you may need a rinse or conditioner for dry or oily hair. Need to have it looked at by a hair person. Male or Female. Good luck.

You should get a hair cut every three months and cut an inch of split ends of yes that's true. But it making your hair grow faster is just an old wives tale.

Cutting your hair does not make it grow faster.
It keeps the ends healthy though, so they don't break off and make your hair shorter.
Stylists will tell you how much you need to cut off. Don't cut split ends off yourself with regular scissors... it'll get much worse!

anything above the scalp line is dead...... cutting it will have no effect on the rate of growth.
split ends can be all lengths, so an inch might do it, and six inches might leave some, depending on your hair.
ask the hairdresser, she will have a better idea because she can see it, we can't see it here online.

it depends how much damage you have. it might be less than an inch, it might be more
usually the stylist will tell you that he/she needs to cut off a lot/a bit depending on your split ends
