This is double sided. It can reduce crimes by scaring criminals but this can also cause them to do something stupid. Also they could get away because its like a warning.

The reason an ambulance could potentially reduce crimes is that they are always out on the streets. They have both handheld and radios in the ambulance and usually direct contact with police agencies so they can kind of be like a watch dog out there. In addition...the sirens are often blaring and that sound can be criminals worst nightmare....so it may prevent them from committing a crime.
You might remember a Cheech and Chong episode where they are driving a car with a load of marijuana and hear a siren, panic and eat a big bag of it. Just as they finish eating it an ambulance passes by lol.....perfect example...

I don't know about Flushing NY but they don't reduce crimes in Florida. In fact the most dangerous job as a fire fighter paramedic down here is riding in the ambulance. People do not yield to them and they are often in accidents.

One comment for those who say the sirens could be mistaken for police. That may be possible, but where I'm from, police sirens and those on ambulances don't sound the same.

I'll take a wild guess at it...

maybe the sirens can be mistaken for a police car's siren? The sound and lights from a distance can discourage criminals from doing their thing maybe.
