As a people God chose them so that His majesty and glory would be made manifest to the rest of the world. But, like all other peoples, they (the Jewish people) are held to the same standards that God holds all peoples to. The Jew must acknowledge Christ as their means of reconciliation with a just God. In other words, if Christ is not the Messiah of the Jews then He is not the Savior of the Christians.

Ok, think about this a moment. They are *chosen* to be Jews.
Hand picked. Not just scraped up out of whatever happens to be floating around out there, and ready to convert to Judaism. To become a Jew, they don't send humans around choosing everyone else by going out a preaching them in to join the congregation. To be chosen, God taps you on the shoulder, and says "Hey you, over here". And so you are either born into it, or you come to it on your own, without others trying to get you there, but because God told you so.
(no, I am not Jewish)

Scripture tells that this group of people were chosen because they were the smallest and the weakest among people. The intent was so that the power of God could clearly be seen as God revealed his ways through them.
The term Jew originated with the settlement of Judah after they went to the promised land. It was in Judah that the wisdom of Jehovah was established. This is told in Judah's blessings and is referred to in his standard and color.
Jehovah's Established Wisdom [Jew] rests on the tribe who makes their testament accordingly.
Num 6 tells the Law of the Nazarite which belongs to those who choose to set themselves aside for the purpose of serving the LORD. The LORD chooses those who choose him and are faithful to his ways.* Now you see in both Testaments, Old and New, those who shaved their heads for a vow.
This understanding was lost over time as so much is lost. All who say they are Jews are not as scripture would have it; today the term has added new meaning by assignment from the population.

Good question, sometimes we hear a phrase so often it loses or changes it's meaning.
I found an interesting answer that somewhat relates to your question at the website www.MusingsAboutGod.com
the article is kind of long so I won't post it here, but it's in the article "How the Ransom works".

What are you talking about? It was an everlasting covenant with Yahweh that cannot be broken. The Jews had no need of a savior, they already had one in Yahweh. In fact, the Old Testament specifically states that Yahweh is their only savior. What they needed was a messiah, a King to restore Israel. That is why they rejected Jesus. Christ was a savior, but a savior from who? Yahweh?

Imagine the world with only 10 million people vs. 7 billion people. There is your answer.
Satan has deceived Israel into thinking that they remain God's chosen people. Satan had Jesus crucified but he can't accept Jesus rising from the dead even though Satan reluctantly accepts Jesus as both God and the Son of God. Even though Satan knows that Jesus is God, he told the Judaic leaders that Jesus never existed and the leaders believed in Satan.
The world has grown exponentially and Christianity (and Islam) have made their way to every nook and crannie of the World in fulfillment of the prophesy of Daniel.

There are no chosen people, there is no master race. We were all born kicking and screaming, covered with stuff, and in the end we all die, and each of us dies alone.
But there will always be people who think they are better than you.
