I know that early religions and their gods didn't have the belief and it developed as humans and their society developed. Anyone know exactly when and how the belief in afterlife was developed? Did the early jewish tribes believe in a literal afterlife?

Well how far back are we going? Ancient Sumerians, Babylonians, Aztecs, Mayans, Incans, and Egyptians had an afterlife belief.

The concept of an afterlife was developed by the Greeks. Judaism never made much room for it. But Paul was educated as a Greek so he imported a lot of Platonism into Christianity.

There is evidence that belief in an afterlife existed as far back as the Neanderthals, who buried their dead with grave goods. The grave goods suggest a belief that the dead have needs beyond life.

Just check The Book of Spirits from Alain Kardec. I dont know if he started this belief, but he was certainly someone that changed many people's opinion about what happens after this. My religion is Spiritism and we believe in life after death.
