The expression "young man about town" to describe a stylish young man taking full advantage of what the city had to offer has been with us for some time -- as shown by Thackeray's book "Mr Browns Letters to a Young Man About Town" . In those days (getting on for a couple of centuries ago) women led restrictive lives, but in an age where women can lead dashing, sophisticated lies the expression "young man about town" has been extended to the female gender -- hence "Girl about town".
