This site mentions "over several years" http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/3756/prednisone_how_safe_is_it.html
I think that long term is over 6 months but I'm not a medical authority. None of the web sites that I explored define "long term use"

I am 60 years old. I've been taking 5 mg of Prednisone daily for 30 years for a rare auto-immune condition that destroyed my inner ears - hearing and balance. I understand that I will never be able to live without it because my body no longer manufactures it. We never even discuss the possibility of going off it. Yes, of course there have been compromises - weight, mood swings, depression - but it keeps my body from attacking other vital organs and helps control my considerable arthritis. It's a wonderful/terrible drug.
