In South & Far East Asian cultures, a chakra (pronunciation (help·info)) is thought to be a nexus of metaphysical and/or biophysical energy residing in the human body. The New Age movement, and to some degree the distinctly different New Thought movement, have also adopted and elaborated on this belief.

Chakras are in series from bottom to top. All chakras are spiral difficult to make out where they begin where they end. Through bhakti (devotion) or meditation one reach to a particular stage, where chakras stop revolving, and one attains a spiritual level. Then to the next chakra, and thus reach to the top the final last called sahastrar where the journey ends. Most of the people are in wrong impression that this is some kind of exercise and can be achieved by practicing only. But the fact is only pure hearted surrendering in meditation with 50% emotional energy and 50% intellectual care full observation is needed in awakening these kundalini chakras and one must learn how to stop also.

Caution: 100% emotional energy force without intellectual (systematic) care of conduct, when to stop and when to start, mostly result in complete and not recoverable madness state (can't control). Therefore it is not advisable at all to do without a proper guide or thorough knowledge. We see many (90%)mad wandering here and there due to this reason.

Animals yes inanimant objects no, plants no. Chakras help awaken the kunadlini, which gives you visions, a higher sense of self, a calmness of mind, a higher sense of creativity and logic. my old dog begged for the quartz crystal, because she knew what it was for, opening her chakras

Chakras are invisible energy areas in specific locations in your body (and outside your body). This webpage has some good information about what they are and how to balance & heal them:
