Jews of that time were enslaved, oppressed, and slaughtered by the Babylonians and Egyptians.
This created a deep unspeakable hatred in their hearts
and vengeance on their minds for their oppressors.
The only way to feel balanced after centuries of injustice, is to
create an all-powerful vengeful God that was on their side.
With this new found inner strength, even Jews that were condemned to death by their oppressors can find solace in the fact that their God will deliver serious retribution to those
who would harm his "Chosen People"(The Jews).

Well,...it might have something to do with having so much compitition. That is to say that, if you want to bring the uneducated into the fold and keep them there it's best to create a God that will beat the ever-loving crap out of you if you even think about following someone else. It is a sure thing that there was a great deal of competittion at the time and the most wrathful mother of the bunch seems to have won the fight. Big freakin' surprise, huh, cowboy?

Simple, to justify their own violence and cruelty. It is easier to justify mass genocide, stealing neighboring land and explain your own ignorance if you blame it on your god.
