Find a cause where you can contribute the best of your talent. Help people build peace monuments, and bridge cultural gaps. Help save the environment by telling them about good waste management practices, saving energy, and by planting more trees. Pay your taxes, honor your parents and elderly, report corrupt activities by politicians. Keep your hands full of good deeds, keep busy daily by translating those good deeds into good works.

I volunteer in a soup kitchen. I don't know what size community you live in. I know some communities are so small that there aren't many opportunities. This may sound like little things to you, but when I walk to the post office I take notice of any litter on the way down. On the way back I pick it up and put it in my garbage can. I hold doors open for people. I will run and get a door for someone who has their hands full. I just try to do nice things for people. Be helpful, caring. Just listening to someone who has no one to talk to is a good thing to do. A lot of people are lonely and maybe what they're saying isn't interesting to you, but taking the time to listen to them means the world to them. One day I was coming out of a store and I smiled at an elderly lady who was coming in. She stopped me and asked me if she knew me. I said, "No ma'am, we never met". She told me that she just had to ask because no one smiled at her anymore. How sad. Sometimes it's the littlest things that help out people around you.

Most communities welcome volunteers.
It helps people out and it does a big boost for self esteem.
I have met so many interesting people volunteering to help the senior citizens.

I also volunteered at a horse rescue ranch and learned all about raising horses and meeting very kind people.

Another way to be a good citizen is to report crime and abuse.

Thanks for asking.

The best way is to get involved. You can volunteer within your community at specific projects that meet the real needs in your area.

Here's a link to some of the issues to help you get some ideas:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/vca/citizen-academy/

Your local volunteer center can connect you with volunteer projects in your area. These projects can be one-time or short-term. Volunteer centers can also connect you with longer-term projects as well.

Here are some links to help you find your volunteer center:

You can also find a connection to various non-profit agencies through your chapter of the United Way:

Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the library, work at the children's shelter, food bank, and at our local parks.

Good luck!
