http://www.craigslist.com < CL is fantastic for this sort of thing. In fact I bought a car from a seller there two years ago and it's been great!

When buying a car some things to factor in:

-- How much mileage is already on the car? How many miles per gallon does it have?
If the mileage is extremely high - over120k miles I'd advise against
If the miles per gallon aren't at least 28.. I wouldn't go for it. Especially with the raising gas prices.

-- What kind of work has been done/needs to be done on the car?

Obviously cosmetic issues aren't really a problem, but mechanical issues are a biggie. Make sure that the sellers offering the car can give you a recorded history of check-ups/mechanical work/oil changes done on the car in the past few years.

-- Was the transmission/engine replaced recently?
This is a biggie. I do see some ads on CL bosting that the engine has been replaced etc. Guess what? If the engine was replaced, it has an approx. 2 year lifespan .. which means, you're going to have to have it worked on/replaced again in the future.

-- Are they really charging you the value of the car?

-- How much will car insurance/registration cost? Remember to knock that off after you buy the car.

Lastly, always see the car with a friend to get another opinion other then your own. If your friends advise against it, it's probably the better choice.

Double plus if you have a friend that knows how to do mechanical work on cars.

well if u go to a dealership then you won't, and if u do its gonna have way too many miles on it and or its gonna be very old, ur best bet to find one is looking online at private sellers or checking the postings in the newspaper.
