You're probably thinking of the English Mastiff, which is 100 lbs. heavier and about 6 inches taller, has looser skin, etc.

There is also the Neapolitan Mastiff, which is a dark grey color and has little short ears - the type of dog Fang is in the Harry Potter movies.

There is also the Dogue de Bordeaux, aka the French Bullmastiff - the type of dog Hooch is in the movie Turner & Hooch.

There is only one "Bullmastiff."

old english mastiff ,bull mastiff, bordeaux(french)mastiff and american mastiff. but the one i think you want is old english they are the biggest ones. my mom has two!! they are great with kids. the dog on sandlot is an old english mastiff and turner and hooch has a french mastiff. steer clear of the neopalitan mastiffs they are very aggressive!! all of the mastiffs i stated above are all different. the word mastiff is just a descriptive word. bull ,old, english, neo ,french, these are different breeds with different temperments. many breeds actualy fit into the mastiff category.

I believe you are talking about the Mastiff. They are about twice as heavy as a bull mastiff and look the same. They are very large dogs and accordingly don't have a very long lifespan.
