I am getting a puppy for my birthday and need some serious help wiht choosing the breed. I want a protective dog that has pretty good energy and is a cuddlier but also has a good sense of when soemthign is wrong and is ready to protect. I have a dominant dog in the house already so it cant be overly dominant so that dog i was thinking about is a american pitbull and get a female so it wont be so cuaght up on the dominant thing and ill get it spaded so there wont any babies...good idea?

american pitbull females spayed or not can still be dominant dogs.. Bad idea I think..

Its a good idea if you can provide the dog with firm and consistent training, as well as proper socialization. This breed does have lots of energy and can be destructive if you don't give it enough physical and mental stimulation.
I reccomend you get it from a shelter, rescue, or reputable breeder, since these dogs are being poorly bred and over bred by backyard breeders which adds to their bad reputation.
I also recommend you get a female if you already have a dominant male.
Pit bull breeds are my favorite. These dogs are so smart and loving if raised right.

There are lots of other dogs that have those qualities too. Pit Bull's are one of the most time consuming breeds, they should hardly ever be left alone because they have a nack for getting into trouble. Personally I'd get an American Bull Dog or a Neopolitan Mastiff.

if you live in a cold environment i really suggest a Great Pyrenees. i have a border collie/Pyrenees and he is the best dog in the world (panda). his mother(princess) is a purebred border collie and you can really tell the difference between the two. Princess is shy and Panda will protect me at all costs.

are you sure you want a pit they can be aggressive. i had a friend who had one and she loved her. i would never get one but i have heard if you get one from a good breeder they can be very good. just do your research. have you ever considered a dachshund? they are small but sweet and cuddly. playful and funny! they are protective if they feel the need. if you are going for a larger dog look into old english mastiff huge! but they are gentle giants and are great cuddlers and protectors my mom has two and i have two small children that have been around them and they are so careful. i have never felt more comfortable with a large dog than i do with the old engish mastiffs and they are so big that no one will dare cross you when its around! it doesn't need to be aggressive!!

You should get a female chihuahua because they love their owner and protects them i know this because i have one and every time i have a visitor it rips some skin off of them. Rather than that there great dogs. And they sleep on your neck too.

i think you need to go with different breed bringing a pit when dog already in house is not good try a boxer or gsd
