When I was a kid my family always had ni**** toes in the house. Now when I go to the store I can't seem to find them and can't ask cause well I don't know their real name. This makes it really hard with my kids around and such cause I love the nut but don't have a name for it. No one I have asked through work & friends know them by anyother name. So I was hoping someone could help. Cause I would hate to have another scene in the store where my kid almost yelling "hey mom is this the ni**** nuts you were asking dad about?!?!" from about 15 feet away. That was a bad day!
Anyhow they are dark brown almost half moon shaped with a very hard shell. The nut it self is very hard to get out of it's shell in one piece and if you get a little of the shell skin left on your nut it tastes very very foul!
Anyone know what they are actually called?

Yes, they are called Brasil nuts. The Brazil nut is the seed of a giant tree that grows in a geographic area shared by Bolivia, Brazil and Peru; this area is part of the Amazon forest in South America.

Morphologically, this seeds or almonds are inside in a fruit of corpuscle shape of 15 cm. Of diameter with a very hard shell that reminds the appearance of a "coconut". The individual seeds are of triangular shape and the nut itself is of stretched shape, irregularly cylindrical and of light cream color.

I also grew up in a time & place where Brazil nuts had this unfortunate, awful nickname.

After my Pensacola grandfather was finally persuaded that this nickname for his favorite nut was offensive, he compromised by calling them "you-know-what toes", which satisfied nobody.

One day he got flummoxed and offer the nuts to mixed company as "n****r you-know-whats", which was even worse.

Thanks for your question, which revived a long-forgotten memory.

I was going to say PECANS, but everyone else who answered said BRAZIL nuts. Pecans have that same description.

Brazil nuts
I can't believe you don't know their proper name.
Have you been living in a cave?
Good luck
PS: Grew up in Alabama, and that's what the ignorant folks there call 'em,too.
