I have a stafford bull terrier male of 4 yrs old, and when I take him of the lead all he wants to do is sniff other dogs, but these dogs can be very far away, when I call him he ignores me but once he has finished sniffing he will come back very slowly knowing he has done wrong, it can be very embarrasing, but this does not happen all the time, how do I deal with this?

Don't let him off the lead. Teach him to come when you call him.. He needs more training..

Its good to let your dog socialize, get a long training lead (around2-3m are the longest usually) and allow him to go see the other dogs but keep the lead slack and loop a small amount round one hand, then call on him when he's done with all the butt sniffing and if he ignores you turn and let the loop go and walk briskly. The Slack will be taken up and he will have no option but to pay you attention, and prob (hopefully) follow you. Give him big praise and ideally a treat. Do this for a good couple of weeks when on every walk and it should be sorted. Had same trouble with my collie and got this advice off of a behaviourist. Not really sure what to tell you. When I take my dog to the park, I always keep him on his lead for a quite a while, and let him look only at the dogs who come to look at him. Once I take him off of his lead I always keep it handy and if he doesn't listen or obey me I put it back on him. This method seems to work for me.

All the energy from all the other dogs is just getting to him. He probably is just too excited about it and doesn't want to listen. This is why they say you shouldn't take bully breeds to a dog park. Because they get too caught up in all the excitement and misbehave. This is not true all the time, but it is common.
