I think it depends on the ages of your kids, however we enjoy nice walks after dinner and if you have younger children a quick stop at the park can tire them out for bedtime. If you are looking for indoor activities, things like baking or involving them with the cooking is great. Playing childhood games such as simon says or singing along and dancing to some music on the radio. Playing playdough (if you're interested in a recipe for this you can e-mail me). Card games are fun and inexpensive for almost all ages. We have a weekly movie night and enjoy popcorn and treats (good for all ages).
There are lots of ideas on different websites as well, such as familyfun.com

When my son was younger 3-5 I used to do art projects with him like drawing or coloring or painting. When he got older I made a big production of board game night. A scavenger hunt with a map is always great for kids, too. We have a great time with "Make you own pizza" because they get to eat their creations. I buy all the ready made ingredients or you can do it all from scratch. Can be fun either way. THen you all have dinner together and can sample each other creations.

Play board games, talk, watch a good movie together, make something, fix something, talk about family history while making a scrapbook, learn a new skill together like making soap or candles or birdhouses, plan a family outing or way to help the community.

These are what comes to mind. Hope this helps.

How old are the kids involved? I would think a familt craft project would be fun. Just make sure if there are older kids that it is age appropriate.
