Saddam accused Kuwait of slant drilling, amoung other things, saying that they drilled near the border and were actually taking oil from Iraq. Also, if you look at a map, Iraq has a very small amount of land that borders ocean, while its neighbor Kuwait has a lot more, which may have been another factor in the invasion of Kuwait. As for our involvement, the UN and our congress approved the use of force to push Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. It was not approved, however, to push all the way to Baghdad and oust Saddam then, hence why we withdrew after Kuwait was liberated.

Kuait is a strong partner of the US. The US strategically needs oil. Oil is still the most cost effective energy we have. To heat your home, power electric plants, run factories, make plastics and many other products, power your car, our trucks and trains, you need oil.

Saddam invaded Kuait. They asked for our help, we gave it.

For David H and Lopez M, 9/11 had not happend yet. The 1st Gulf war was in 1992. And the vast majority of Congress voted to go to war in Iraq.

Iraq invaded Kuwait for the express purposes of exploiting their oil. The coalition pushed Saddam and his armies back into Iraq and got him to surrender with some pretty stiff terms designed to keep him from building his military to the point where he might attack his neighbors again.

Push Saddam out of Kuwait which he invaded. We probably would have not cared if we did not think Saudi Arabia was next.

We needed to save Kuwait (actually the Kuwaiti oil. wink wink) from Saddam's invasion.

We were actually going to march to Baghdad and take out Saddam too, but he surrendered.

Basically Bush was mad and he couldn't find Osama, so he decided to take his rage out on a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.
