We have a puppy and we're trying to train him. We've been told to train him by praising him when he's good, and scruffing him on the neck when he's bad. What exactly IS scruffing? And how do you scruff a dog?

'Scruffing' is picking up animals by their scruff, i.e. the loose skin on the back of the neck. It's how animals pick up their young, and is thought to be a reasonable method of chastising a young animal, as it makes them think of their mothers! Its a more common method for restraining cats. Only do it if your puppy is LITTLE (i.e under 7 pounds) as dangling excess weight from their scruff is obviously dangerous - parent animals only do it while pups are teeny. Only hold them this way long enough to move them a few feet away from the situation, not to carry them for anything longer than a few seconds. And, only follow the advice given to you if it came from a proper puppy trainer or vet professional!

You scruff a dog the same way you scruff a cat.

The scruff is the extra, loose skin on the back of his neck where the mother dog picks them up and carries them as pups.

Just make sure you are gentle with him--don't scruff him too hard, don't pick him up by his scruff, and only do it when necessary.

Have you tried just saying "No!" in a deep, firm tone of voice (not yelling, though) when he does something bad?

scruffing a dog, is when you grab them by the thick skin on the back of their neck. This is not a very kind way to discipline a dog. There are plenty of other ways to let him know he's done something wrong. One way is the way that a pack of dogs would do it. When he's naughty, scoop him up, roll him onto his back, and taking the first two fingers on each of your hands, push his forearms back to the floor. After doing this, look him right in the eye, and make a quick snarling growling sound. You have to do this quickly, and then when you're done, go back to playing. He'll learn that all play stops when he's done something bad, and the show of dominance overrules all else...there are many ways of disciplining without going to scruffing.
