I have a one year old, white German Shepherd, and when i take him for a walk in the park, he barks at other dogs, i think that he trying to protect me, but my mom says if it continues then it will have to be sold, i dont want this to happen.
WHAT CAN I DO TO STOP IT? i dont want to use anything like an electronic shocking collar.

He may have never been socialized as a puppy (and at his age, he will probably never like dogs, but it is possible to train him to tolerate them). If he is trying to protect you, then he is be possessive, territorial, and dominant. He may also be afraid of the other dogs. I like to use a Gentle Leader. It is a head halter that is a training device which helps to control and correct your dogs behaviour. It is not in any way cruel, although if your dog is dominant, he may try to fight it for a while. You will need to condition him to the Gentle Leader. The Gentle Leader will only help you to control him though. You will also want to teach him to ignore other dogs. When you walk by a park with dogs, distract him with a treat or a toy. Being a shepherd, his ears will probably flicker to the sound of other dogs. If he takes his attention away from you, you correct him with the Gentle Leader. If he follows you, you reward him after you have passed the dogs. To get him to watch you the whole time, he will have to trust you. This means that you are in charge and if a dog is off leash and comes toward him, you need to block your dog so that he does not get spooked or attacked on your watch. Hope this helped. Good luck!

He likely wasn't socialized to other dogs when he was younger. You have to get him used to being around other dogs.
A little intolerant of your mom to get rid of a dog cause he barks at other dogs.. Should have been socializing him from the beginning.
A shock collar isn't going to MAKE him tolerant of other dogs, being around other dogs that are well behaved and who like other dogs will make him realize that dogs are friends. Perhaps he is barking cause he wants to play?!? Barking means alot of things to dogs, not just protection.

There are a lot of fantastic dogs in the world whose only fault is that they are dog aggressive.
A lot of the dogs that come into my animal hospital are dog aggressive, and their owners know this about them, so they just avoid going places where they know there will be other dogs. They do great.

My female doesn't like other dogs too. It is because when she was a puppy we didn't have her around other dogs we wanted her to be people friendly and didn't think about her being dog friendly too.
