Bent barbells are GREAT. they dont get caught on stuff which will slow healing.
As for cleaning use unscented Dial soap once or twice a day, no more than that. Lather it up in your hands while bathing and rub it all over the piercing. Move the ring all around so the soap gets in there. Also once a day give it a sea salt soak. Put sea salt in a dixie cup full of very warm water, mix til disolved. Bend over so the cup is on your stomach then lay down for 10 minutes to soak. Keep a towel handy... sometimes that's hard to do.
Make sure you eat before you go so you don't get dizzy and pass out after the piercing.
GOOD LUCK!

All the pierces I have gotten they have always made me put in a ring. The ring is the best and easiest. I had one done with a bar and it was hard to twist and clean because of the tenderness of the area. Any navel or nipple piercings I would say go with a ring all the way. The best for cleaning is Sea Salt spray (H2Ocean), where ever you go to get it done should have the stuff available to buy.
Good Luck!

More recently, many piercers are coming to prefer the barbell to a CBR (ring). The new way of thinking is that the more you leave the jewelry alone and don't irritate it, the better.
I can vouch for this - I got my navel pierced four years ago and was adamant that I get a barbell. I went through four shops til I found a place that would do it, and it was definitely worth the wait - mine healed right up. My friend who got a ring, however, had nothing but problems because the ring kept rotating the dried gunk through the fresh piercing. Yuk!

I have 3 navel piercings and a nipple one, the nipple one is more painful then the navel for sure. The thing with those piercings is that they might have healing problems, like rejection. These are the places where there is the most irritation on the body; when you wear clothes, bras, sleep... So when you get pierced, remember to ask to have bio-jewelry that is implant graded so your body accepts it better. The nipple hurts more because there is more blood circulation and more nerve endings, but both of the piercings are worth it.

it depends on where your waist folds. if it folds at the navel when your sitting, then its best to get a curved bar because a ring would be pushed to the side and make it uncomfortable and less likely to heal. however, if the lip above ur navel is rather distinct then its perfectly fine to go with a ring... remember which ever you choose you can replace with the other once the healing process is finished so it really doesnt matter providing you take good care of it.

Most places require you start with a bar, because it is easier to clean. You are going to heal when you heal. Invest in some neosporin and shower frequently. By the way, I hope you have some low rize jeans and don't use a belt at all the first couple of weeks. It can get caught on the bar and be very uncomfortable.

A bar. Rings always take longer to heal. In case your curious this piercing isnt painful at all, and heals relatively quickly. Good luck!

I had my navale pierced two years ago. I would recomend the barbell. as most people have been telling you it does not catch easy and it is easy clean. The best cleaning tip I can give you is first do not touch it uless you have washed your hands EXTREMELY well with antibacterial soap and used hand sanitzer!!!! to clean it use peroxide once a day and, als use the hot water with salt trick. if it becomes infected use neosporine.

My girlfriend has one and she loves it. She got hers done @ Ink Slingers in Detroit. They are really good about sanitation. They recommend that you initially put the ring in. When it heals you can put the bars and other stuff in. You should only use antibacterial soap to clean it with until it heals. The soap also helps when you turn it to help keep it from sticking.
