so how do you explain the tenaciousness of religion around the world? I'm not talking about the huge number of gods we've created, just the idea that we keep creating them.

I'd say deep down we know that the god that people believe in is not real. And I'd say deeper down we know that there's this Something that has always been, is us, but we think if we experience it our ego/individuality will go away and, so, we cling to the images of god that support the ego (either we believe in those images or we focus on rejecting them; in both cases, we successfully distract ourselves from experiencing the Changeless or whatever you want to call it).

First, you have to come to terms with what "God" is. God means varied things to different groups of people. Going back to the origination of the concept of God, I'm sure it was used by various remote pockets of people to explain the unexplainable. Because these "tribes" were so remote, and rarely had contact with outsiders, it only stands to reason that they would each have their own version of the concept of God. The concept of God is very real. Just because you cant touch, or see something, does it mean that it does not exist (human thought, TV & radio waves traveling through the air, etc.)? I feel God was personified because it is easier to discuss an entity than it is to come to terms with a feeling.

I do not personify my concept of God. God is not a being. God is infinity. If you take the sum of everything that was, everything that is, and everything which will be, that is what I consider as being God. Therefore, we were not made in God's image. We are a part of God, as with everything else which was, is and will be.

Does that sound kind of "out there"? Maybe that is the reason God was personified?

That may be your take on this subject, but it certainly isn't mine or that of a whole lot of people just like me. God created me, not the other way around.

Deep down inside I *do* understand that there is a God and that He loves me so much that He sent His only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, as atonement for our sins. Our faith endures because He is alive and we are His people.

So if the "god" that you've created doesn't satisfy your needs, try the one living and true God, our loving Father in Heaven.

Deep down inside, we all understand that there is a God, which explains all the religions and why we keep creating them. We instinctively know that there is a "higher power" then us, and religion is one of the ways that we try to understand/acknowledge it.

Actually - deep down inside we all know that there is a God.
This innate knowledge is what has caused us to create gods of all kinds Since people are always on a quest for the anwers to questions that they have

The need to feel safe and comforted is a powerful, driving force in humans. The whole "belief in a god" thing gives people hope, so they cling to it.

Deep down we all understand that there IS a God. Some people are just too ignorant to recognize Him.
