My mum joined a gym 3 months ago, she doesnt smoke, eats healthily but is slightly over weight. I worry that her exercise regime of hour and a half in the gym 6 days a week is overdoing it for someone of her age. particularly as before this she had very little exercise. She's 52. Should she slow down?

She should listen to her body. If her body starts showing signs of damage, she should cut down. If, on the other hand, she starts seeing improving health, you should do like her and start exercising.

Hi,
It really does depend on your mum's physcial level and abilty to start with and just how much weight she had on and has lost etc..there is so many factors that she must take into consideration..not to mention if she has any other medical conditions.

It is possible to overdo exercise, it can become an obession. She should be careful too warm up and cool down approprately to stop damage to any ligaments etc as they are very painful if torn or damaged. She must also make sure she is well hydrated and that she has eaten something to ensure her sugar levels don't drop too low during or after exercise as this can result in fainting, dizziness, headaches etc.

It is unlikely that this will happen but if she was or starts to cut down what she eats or over exercises in an attempt to burn off the caories of everything she eats...this is actually a form of bulimia/eating disorder as I did this at one stage and was fainting continuously (due to the low blood sugar i mentioned previously)

However, try not to worry too much, she is probably just getting an adrenilne rush from the increased endorphanes in her body and her feeling of self acomplishment is rising, and good on her for taking her health and fitness seriously...just watch out for any warnig signs.

If you are worried, i am sure she wouldn't mind if you sat down and firstly stated that you're really pleased and proud of her for being so determined but your worried that she might be over doing it and see what she says...im sure it's nothing to worry about and if she is sensible she will no when enough is enough.

Hope it all goes well.

That sounds like a bit much, but if she is still able to walk out of the gym and drive a car safely without her heart pounding out of her chest, she's probably OK. A lot depends on her stamina, how strenuously she is exercising, and if she is taking breaks between exercises to let her heart settle down. It would be a good idea to get her to have her blood pressure checked during and after her sessions, just to make sure it stays in the safe range.

However, to answer your question, some people can overdo exercise, such as anorexics and people with clogged arteries, and it can result in a heart attack or death.

52 is not that old for an hour and a half. This is probably a healthy amount of time and energy spent and probably would be a good maximum amount.
