if you're afraid of sounding stupid thats not bad. every girl is afraid. if he's cute and everyone else thinks so to better get a move on or he'll be asked already. Start the conversation like this
You"So are you going to the dance"
Guy"Yes/No..."
(now if he says yes go on like this)
You"Are you going with anyone?"
Guy"yes/no"
(if he answers no proceed)
You"Oh I'm not either, so I was kinda wondering if you...would want to come with me..."
Guy"Maybe/yes/no/I'll think about it"
The main answer you don't are these from the order you ask
yes, yes now if he answers yes to are you going with anyone say oh thats cool and say well will you save me one dance?
he'll say yes no guy will turn you down unless they're a really big jerk. Hopefully he doesn't say no to you if he's not going with someone else because that would be mean. Just don't be afraid to ask him or you won't ask him. Also don't put off asking him because eventually you won't ask him-this is true you if you put it off you will never ask him-As for not sounding stupid don't stutter or say hang on or stop in mid-sentence! The thing that drives most guys is self esteem. He's prolly worrying right now that he has no one to go to the dance with, no one thinks he's cute enough. He's scared of rejection if he does ask someone and they say no. That's why this is the perfect opportunity for you to jump in and just say "Hey, I think you're super cute and would love if you asked me to the dance." That way you give him the chance to have him ask you and know you'll say YES... If you ask him like that, it does two things: Takes away his fear of rejection and boosts his self esteem.

ask him if hes busy on the day of the dance
then ask him in a relaxed way
"oh, you wanna do to the dance with me"
then smile and look him in the eyes.

Try to be casual about it . Compliment him first a little , then ask him if he is going to the dance . Ask him if he is going with someone. etc,etc ( so maybe your not the only one who think he's cute....) then decide from there...

it's middle school, everyone is desperate and stupid, no offense but its true. The question is who is willing to come out of their shell and start enjoying their life and doing what makes you happy.

just start a random conversation with your friends... near him. pretend to get into an argument with your friends about who can dance better. say: i can dance better and i'll prove it to you. and have your friends say: fine then we'll pair up. have all your friends pair up into two's and then you and him are just standing there. and say well now who do i dance with. and have one friend say his name. and then just ask him. or maybe he'll just give in and say sure i'll dance with you without having to ask. .... my friends and i have tried this and it worked... hopefully it works for you.
