I have the opportunity to purchase a Colt AR15 from a friend who is helping to sell off his father in law's estate...according to my friend this rifle was purchased in the early 70s and has only been fired once or twice. It is the M16A1 design (of course) and stamped "SP1", the first digit four digits of the 6 digit serial number are 1221XX. Any information you can give me on this weapon will be greatly appreciated. Also, what would be a fair price for this rifle? Thanks in advance...

You can check a couple of places to get a very good idea what your AR is worth.

"The Blue Book of Gun Values"

I have 2 - Colt AR-15 SP1's - both with Colt 4x scopes - If you buy the rifle you will never be sorry.

I would think it could easily bring 1000.00. I am no expert on the value, but it's an early Colt example and sounds to be in excellent condition. To a collector, the value would probably be more, especially if the original box and information documents are present. If you do purchase it, you might consider buying another upper assembly to put on it for shooting purposes. Then, retain the original upper assembly as-is for future value if you decide to sell the complete gun at some later date.
