i agree with the description by Wikipedia, except for the ridiculous designation of Cantonese as a dialect. Cantonese is the language of the locals in much of Guangdong province and in Hong Kong. It is a very distinct language from Mandarin, and is about 99% mutually unintelligible.

i'm an community Hongkonger, so permit me make this genuine sparkling for you. We in Hong Kong talk Cantonese, that's a spoken chinese language, no longer a dialect. The valid spoken language in mainland China is Mandarin (Putonghua), which isn't what we talk on a on a regular basis foundation, inspite of the indisputable fact that plenty human beings can below it and talk it to a definite quantity. The chinese language is a no longer a single spoken language, yet has many varieties. Cantonese is actual a extra real version and closer to classical chinese language than Mandarin. besides, there is meant to be purely one version of written chinese language characters, till the Communist social gathering in 1949 desperate to invent a bastardized version of chinese language characters referred to as "Simplified chinese language". We in Hong Kong and Taiwan use the unique real version referred to as "classic chinese language". so which you will summarize, we the human beings of Hong Kong do no longer talk or examine a similar variety of chinese language using fact the mainlanders in China.
